Condoms that attacks HIV, herpes to hit Australian stores in months
|
Australian regulators have approved a new condom with an antiviral compound, which can inactivate 99.9 percent of HIV, herpes and other sexually transmitted diseases. It’ll be on the market in months but doctors warn it is not foolproof.
Anti-viral VivaGel, the lubricant and core component of the new condom, contains 0.5 percent astodrimer sodium, a drug designed specifically to fight against HIV. Companies Ansel and Starpharma have got approval from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australian media reported Monday. “The product will be, therefore, expected to be launched quite soon, so probably within the next few months,” Dr Jackie Fairley, Starpharma’s chief executive told ABC Australia. But Dr. Fairley warned that condoms are not foolproof and do not give 100 percent protection from sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. She said however that VivaGel further reduces the chance of infection. “Anything that you can do to reduce the number of virus particles by inactivating them with a substance like VivaGel would reduce the overall viral load. The more viral particles you’re exposed to, that typically translates into a greater chance of infection,” she said. While the gel also has antibacterial properties, its recent regulatory approval in Australia was only related to the viruses it was tested against in laboratory experiments, Dr. Fairley warned. VivaGel is also going through trials in the US for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, but was rejected by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an alternative to antibiotic treatment of the condition. However Starpharma has been given the green light from the FDA for using VivaGel to prevent the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis, which for 50 percent of women with the condition reoccurs within 12 months. This is being developed as a standalone gel in the form of a lubricant, but there are no plans to introduce this onto the Australian market yet. As well as Australia, the gel coated condoms will also be launched in Japan with the country’s biggest condom maker Okamoto. Ansell believes that the branded condom market to be worth over $1 billion a year globally. |

CDC Hill Announcement Thursday, April 3, 2014 CDC data show increase in e-cigarette-related calls to poison centers The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released data that show calls to poison centers involving e-cigarettes rose from one per month in September 2010 to 215 per month in February 2014. The study, Calls to Poison Centers for Exposures to Electronic Cigarettes – United States, September 2010-February 2014, published in today’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), used data from the poison centers in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories—compared total monthly calls involving e-cigarettes with those involving conventional cigarettes.Other key findings include:
- Poison centers reported 2,405 e-cigarette and 16,248 cigarette exposure calls from September 2010 to February 2014.
- E-cigarette calls as a proportion of total calls involving e-cigarettes and cigarettes rose dramatically – jumping from 0.3% in September 2010 to 41.7% in February 2014.
- E-cigarette calls were more likely than cigarette calls to report an adverse health effect following exposure. The most common adverse health effects mentioned in e-cigarette calls were vomiting, nausea, and eye irritation.
- 51.1% of e-cigarette-related poisonings were among young children 0-5 years, while 42% of the poison calls involved adults age 20 and older.
- Poisoning from conventional cigarettes is generally due to young children eating them. Poisoning from e-cigarettes involves the liquid containing nicotine used in the device and can occur three ways: by ingestion, inhalation or absorption through the skin or eyes.

Supreme Court Rulings Strike down DOMA and Prevent Enforcement of California’s Proposition 8
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) is pleased to announce that today she introduced legislation to strengthen physical and health education for America’s children. The Promoting Health as Youth Skills in Classroom and Life (PHYSICAL) Act is co-sponsored by Reps. John Lewis (GA-5) and Jared Polis (CO-2). This measure would amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (No Child Left Behind) to elevate physical and health education to “core subjects” under federal Law. Subjects that are not considered “core” under the current education law are frequently marginalized due to lack of funding or administrative priority.
The PHYSICAL Act ensures that elementary and secondary schools have the option to use Title I and Title II funds for physical and health education programs and teacher professional development. It is endorsed by more than 80 national organizations including the Ohio Public Health Association.
“Promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging fitness are so important for our children’s development and reducing the nation’s epidemic of childhood obesity. Many school districts, however, are forced to curtail or eliminate physical education and health classes due to lack of resources. The PHYSICAL Act gives our schools the flexibility they need to give physical education the attention it deserves in promoting our children’s well-being,” said Congresswoman Fudge.
